We are gonna do something really cute! I found this adorable piece at Dollar Tree and just had to make it the center of this craft. This fast and simple craft might make a great housewarming gift. Pop by the Dollar Tree and let’s get crafting!

Here’s everything you’ll need:
- Dollar Tree “Home Sweet Home” sign
- Small wood shims (you could use paint sticks or large popsicle sticks in a pinch)
- 8″ x 10″ canvas
- Hot glue gun and glue sticks
- Waverly Antique Wax (or any brown acrylic paint) and paintbrush
- White acrylic paint
- Greenery garland (I found mine at Hobby Lobby)
- Scrap fabric or ribbon
- Raffia
- Bead garland (more from Dollar Tree!)
Here’s how we did it:
Start by lining up the shims on top of the canvas. Shims are wedge-shaped, with one thick end and one thinner end. Be sure to alternate them as you cover the canvas. Hot glue them on the canvas. It’s okay if they hang off the edge a little.

To get a very thin, light layer of paint, I start by misting my shims with a little plain water. Then apply a light layer of paint. Make sure to cover the nooks and crannies. Also paint the edges of your canvas.

I stripped the sign down by removing all the twine, staples, and greenery. I’m breaking it down to build it back up again. You could just stick the sign right on the wood, but what fun would that be?

Use a small paintbrush to cover the “Home” part of the sign. Don’t forget to get inbetween the letters, basically anything you can see when it lays flat. Hot glue the sign onto your shims.

Next, pop off a few springs (2-4 pieces should do) from your garland. Hot glue them above the circle. In the center of the greenery, you can tie up a little bow with the raffia and scrap fabric. This black and white plaid pattern brought everything together perfectly!

Finally, you’ll take your wooden bead garland (which I found from Dollar Tree) and hot glue it to the back of the canvas.

I just love how this turned out… a perfect gift for a friend! If you missed this craft live, be sure to check out the replay below…
