We recently purchased a new home full of so much charm. We knew we wanted to lighten up and put our own touch on our new home. So we started with the walls, cabinets, and brick fireplaces. This brick wall fireplace is a main feature in not only the living room, but the kitchen and dining room as well. I knew I wanted it to make a statement and the German Smear was going to do just that!
I, of course hopped on Pinterest and began searching different German Smear techniques and this is what I came up with. I took a few different techniques and mixed them all together to make this amazingness.
The German Smear technique is very similar, if not the same as as whitewashing, lime washing, dry brushing, and even just painting your existing brick white, The end result looks the same to me.

Let me show you everything I used to create this amazing statement piece in our new home.
Heres what you’ll need:
- FastSet Repair Mortar
- Something to mix the mortar in
- large sponge
- chippy brush
- water
- White Paint (we used our interior white wall paint)
- drop cloth or paper to protect your flooring

- We used the FastSet Repair Mortar and made a 50/50 mixture of Mortar and water. The consistency was very much like yogurt.
- I also added 1 Tablespoon ish of white wall paint.
I started out using a scraper to apply the mixture, but I found that it wasn’t what I was going for. So I grabbed my chippy brush and started brushing it on. I then went my sponge and starting wiping it on. Once I tried both these techniques I liked what I was seeing. I suggest you play around with a few different techniques, try the sponge and brush on method.

We are so happy with how our fireplace turned out, It’s an eye catcher for sure!
If you tried this technique on your brick, let us know how it worked and share some pictures with us. We love a good before and after home DIY. And stay tuned we have so many DIY Home renovations to share with you all as we make our home OURS!
