DIY Decoupaged Cardboard Vase, Using Napkins

I AM ITCHING for spring!!! AND I AM A HOARDER or a COLLECTOR of things that I think I can make something out of one day!

Those are the two things you need to know about me before you go any farther!

While organizing my craft room I found this big cardboard tube that I had been saving for some reason. Who even knows how long I’ve had it or what was on it. << HOARDER as stated above. I also found all of my cute napkins that I got from Party City!!!

So here’s what I used to make this:

  • Cardboard Roll
  • Decorative Napkin
  • Modpodge, Matte or Gloss, your choice.
  • Sanding Block
  • Foam Brush
  • Apple Barrel White Paint
  • Raffia

I started with painting my cardboard roll white. THIS IS SUPER IMPORTANT. The napkin will become transparent when you decoupage it, SO you want your base color to be something other than cardboard brown.

While it dried, I separated my napkin, and trimmed the gold edges so they would not show.

I then applied a thin coat of modpodge directly to the cardboard roll and started attaching the napkin. IMPORTANT: Wrinkles are a good thing to achieve the look of the finished product for this vase. Make sure it is a THIN layer of modpodge. Too much is not a good thing here.

I continued to attach the napkin until the cardboard roll was completely covered.

I trimmed the top and bottom, and used the sanding sponge to smooth out the edges. NOW, let the modpodge completely DRY!!!!

Only when your modpodge is completely dry can you start this next step! Use your sanding sponge to start sanding directly over the napkin. You’ll see that where there were wrinkles creates a really beautiful distressed look!! Don’t go too crazy with the sanding just do a little at a time until you like the look of it!

If this little cutie can do it so can you!!! 🙂

Once you like the way it looks seal it with modpodge. Use the Gloss modpodge for a glassy look, or the matte if you want the look in the photo.

Raffia finishes it off perfectly!!!!!

That’s all I did, and I think it turned out so dang cute!!!! It’s hard to believe it’s cardboard right?

All of the flowers you see came from hobby lobby on sale over the years.

So y’all, it’s hard to figure out my exact cost of this project. I found the cardboard and I barely used any modpodge and paint. I used a tiny bit of raffia and only one napkin out of a package of 16. The package cost 2.99 I think. So if you are a mathing kind of person… then what is that maybe like $1.50 and it’s sooo CUTE!!!!

If you love it as much as we do, could you do us a favor and…
