When I ran across this rug at the Dollar Tree I knew I wanted to do something big with it, it was just too pretty to lay on the floor. So I grabbed my hot glue gun and scissors and got busy. I’ll walk you through everything I did to create this amazing-ness!
Lets start with some supplies.

Supplies used:
- 1 Dollar Tree rug
- 1 pack of wooden blocks from Dollar Tree (they can be found in the toy section with the games)
- 1 large piece of cardboard 17in. x 23.5in. or a sheet of foam or poster board from Dollar Tree.
- Optional- black and white wooden beads, mine came from a bead garland from Walmart.
- Hot glue gun and gluesticks.
- Waverly antique glaze/wax or any kind of stain you have on hand.
- scissors
OK, so now that we have everything we need, lets get crafty!
First start by cutting your cardboard/foam board 17in. x 23.5in. Once that’s done lay your rug down on top of the cut cardboard, you should have a half inch of cardboard on the top and bottom still showing.
I then started hot glueing my rug right onto the cardboard. I worked in small sections, making sure to focus on the edges.
Now grab your wooden blocks and you will need 13 blocks for the top and 13 blocks for the bottom. I went ahead and hot glued them together. I used a very small dot of hot glue because I didn’t want any hot glue showing on the front side of my wooden blocks.
Now you can grab your antique wax or stain and just brush that right on to your blocks. I found it much easier to stain them after I secured them together, rather than painting them individually. Let your stain air dry, I’m afraid if you use your heat gun to speed up the process, it may re melt your hot glue and then your blocks will fall apart.
Once all your blocks are completely dry you can start bringing this project together. With my hot glue gun on high temp I applied a long strip of hot glue to my cardboard and then quickly laid down my strip of wooden blocks. Then I repeated that same step for the bottom of my sign.

Now at this point I stood back and drooled over how cute this is looking.
Lastly, I added some black and white beads for a hanger and I think it paired perfectly with this project. And just like that, it’s done and I love everything about this project, but my favorite part is that it only cost about $2 to create. WooHoo!! Thats some serious “decorating on a budget”!
I hope you have enjoyed this project as much as I have. Make sure you share pictures of your creations with us over on VIP Facebook group page, its Lizzy and Erin Designs VIP.
